Compression ratio of wood pellet

Generally, wood fiber compression molding is divided into two stages. The first stage, in the early compression stage, the lower pressure is transferred to the wood fiber particles, so that the structure of the original solid particles arranged in the loose began to change, and the voidage in the biomass decreased. Second stage, when the pressure increases, large pellets of wood fibers break down under the affect of pressure and become smaller pellets, deformation or plastic flow occurred, the pellets begin to fill the void and the particles contact each other more closely and mesh with each other, a part of the residual stress is stored inside the formed block so that the particles are combined more firmly, at the same time, the volume of the material will decrease continuously during the compression process. The particles extend over the plane perpendicular to the maximum principal stress and the area increases, therefore, in thickness, that is, along the direction of the maximum principal stress, it must be smaller and thinner.

The material compression molding process is closely related to the deformation (extension)of the material particles perpendicular to the maximum principal stress(surface). The larger the applied pressure, the finer the particle size is, the more remarkable the particle extension is, and the closer the bonding of the molding is, the greater the density.

Moisture content of wood material

When the moisture content of biomass raw materials is too low, the particles can not be fully extended, the particles are not tight enough to form. Therefore, the wood fiber should be kept at proper moisture content during granulation.

Granulation temperature

With the increase of temperature, lignin in the plant begins to soften and can act as a binder. Below 100 degrees, with the increase of heating temperature, the particles gradually soften and become deformed easily, the average diameter of the two direction (forming density parameters of characterizing particle)of the particle increases with the increase of temperature. When the temperature is higher than the softening temperature of lignin, at high temperature and high pressure, the particle properties of plant materials come close to the properties of fluids, the difference between the maximum principal stress and the minimum principal stress (extension)becomes smaller, the deformation of the particles in the direction perpendicular to the maximum principal stress is impeded, therefore, the average diameter of the two direction decreases instead. Therefore, the proper temperature should be controlled when the wood fiber is granulated.

Different materials contain different fiber components, when the material with different fiber content is compressed under the same pressure, and the energy consumed and the particle density are different, in other words, for different fiber content of material to get good particle forming effect, we need different pressure (different compression ratio).
