make biomass fuel with hay
Hay Pellets
an economical biomass fuel

Hay is dried and processed green crops. It can preserve the nutrition of grass, thereby becoming a popular animal feed. But it takes too much space and tastes not good. Making hay pellets can avoid these drawbacks and take full advantages of hay. With high heat value and low carbon emission, hay is also an economical raw material for making biomass fuel. You can use hammer mill to crush and hay pellet press to pelletize it. This is a worthwhile business, you can save cost and make profit from it.

What’s the relation between hay and grass?

Hay refers to the clipped and dried grass and other green crops like alfalfa, legumes and herbage. It is basic and major feed for plant-eating animals such as grazing cattle, goats, sheep, horses, etc.

Drying green crops aims to preserve the nutritious content so that they can be used at any time. Well processed hay retains the green color of grass, so it is called green hay. Hay is regarded as the processed products of green crop, as well as stores to preserve the nutrition of grass. They are totally different from crop straw. In terms of the nutrition value, inferior hay is less nourishing than straw, but superior hay has equal nutrition content as wheat bran.

Hay is popular in husbandry and agriculture owing to its low cost, lighter weight and abundant sources. Meanwhile, hay is easier for animals to digest, and reduce the stress on digestive tract. Processing grass into hay contribute to long-term preservation and market circulation, and relieve the disparity of grass supply in different seasons. Hay is usually made by sun-curing and artificial drying. Easy processing technology makes it the most common way to preserve feed grass.

Why are hay pellets better animal feeds?

Hay is a common feed of animals. But feeding livestock with hay has some drawbacks. They are insufficient and wizened in winter, and superfluous in summer. Hay stack takes to much space and deposit too much ash. Some kinds of hays are too rough and smelly to eat directly. Therefore, more and more farmers choose hay pellets to take the place of hay.

hay pellets are smaller than hay
Higher conversion ratio
During pelletizing process, the steam promote starch gelatinization and makes hay easier for digestion. You can get more meat, eggs and milk for livestock with less hay feed.
hay pellets are easier for animals to digest
Small in size
The volume of hay pellets is only one forth of that of hay materials. Pelletizing is an effective way to reduce the storage and transportation cost for farmers.

Less dust
Pelletizing can reduce the dust deposited in straw stacks. Eating hay pellets is beneficial to livestock’s health. Farmer can thereby reduce the feeding procedure, and create condition to realize intensive and mechanized animal husbandry.
Better palatability
Hay pellets tastes better for animals. They can stimulate livestock’s appetite and increase their food intake, which is a effective way to fatten mutton sheep and beef cattle.
Contribute to animals' growth
Smooth surface, high hardness and cooked flavor make hay pellets an excellent food for animals. They can chew the pellets completely and fully digest them.
Why are hay pellets economical fuel?

Hay is frequent biomass waste on farm and pasture. Besides serving as animal feed, it plays an important role in generating heat for warm and cooking. Hay has been natural fuel since ancient times. Currently, with the wide adoption of biomass energy, hay emerges as an economical raw material for making biomass pellet fuel. It has the following advantages:

hay pellets biomass fuel
Low raw material cost

Hay is the most residuum in agriculture and forestry. You can gather it on your farm or purchase it at low price. It is much cheaper than fossil fuels. All you need is a hay pellet mill and auxiliary equipments like hammer mill.

Environmental friendly

Hay pellets are green energy. Their greenhouse gases emission is 90% less than fossil fuels like coal and gas, a quantity 10 times under the EPA emission standard. Adopting biomass fuel is a way to meet environmental requirement.

High heat value

The heat value of hay pellets reaches up to 8000 BTU, which is comparable to hard wood, and comes near that of fossil fuel. Besides, hay pellets has nice energy output ratio, up to 20:1, while wood is 10:1, and biodiesel is 5:1.

Multiple uses

As we know, hay pellets are excellent animal feed and economical biomass energy. They can be used as mulch and soil conditioner in farmland and garden. By absorbing water they can expand to 4 times their original size.

Crush the hay into powder

Put the hay in bulks into a hammer mill, where it is crushed into fine pieces. If the hay is in bales, you have to take it apart before crushing.

Dry the hay powder

Usually hay contains some moisture in the period of storage. It can cause blockage to the pelletizing machine and retard production. So they must be dried by a dryer machine or natural wind.

Pelletize the hay powder with hay pellet press

Feed the dried hay powder into the hay pellet press. It will come out in the shape of hay pellets. we recommend you to add some additives, which can reduce the ash content in combustion. To those who make animal feeds, adding various nutrient content is also necessary.

Package and storage

Waiting until the pellets coming out from the hay pelletizing machines get cooled. Then pack them in bags for further transportation, storage and sale.
